How do track starting blocks work?

Starting blocks help sprinters achieve a powerful and explosive start by providing a stable platform for their feet to push off. Traditional starting blocks consist of two adjustable foot pedals attached to a rigid frame.  There are also portable versions, which are lighter and do not have the rigid frame.  Athletes push off the pedals with maximum force at the sound of the starting gun. By creating an optimal body angle and leveraging leg strength, starting blocks allow sprinters to accelerate quickly out of a crouched position and gain momentum in the first few strides.
